Standardized Tests
Along with GPAs, standardized tests help colleges measure a student’s academic readiness for college. These tests give colleges a common scale with which to evaluate students nationwide. A standout performance can open the door to many schools and to the possibility of merit-based scholarships. Bad or low scores will be a serious disadvantage in the more competitive admissions process of selective colleges. Unless the student and recommenders can explain poor test results or there are special circumstances, poor scores will most likely close the door to selective colleges.
